Yuki, the Phantom of the Altai Mountains
High in the rugged, snow-covered mountains of the Koš-Agačskij rajon, Republic of Altai, Russia, Yuki, a majestic snow leopard, moves stealthily through the rocky terrain. Known as the “Phantom of the Altai,” Yuki is a symbol of resilience and elegance, perfectly adapted to the freezing temperatures and challenging environment of this remote region.
The Altai mountains provide Yuki with a rich hunting ground, where he preys on Siberian ibex, mountain goats, and marmots. Snow leopards like Yuki are solitary hunters, known for their ability to leap up to 15 meters to catch prey with precision. Weighing between 25 to 55 kilograms, Yuki's powerful limbs and thick fur help him survive the extreme conditions of the Siberian winter.
Yuki’s fur, marked with unique rosettes, blends effortlessly with the rocky backdrop, making him almost impossible to spot. Conservationists in the Altai region monitor snow leopards like Yuki, studying their habits, migration patterns, and how they are adjusting to threats such as habitat loss and climate change.
