Amomi the Elephant

The gentle giant: Amomi, the forest Elephant
Amomi, a female elephant, roams between the Réserve de Faune de Ngoyla and the Réserve de Faune du Dja in the dense rainforests of southeastern Cameroon. This region is part of the vast Congo Basin rainforest, one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems. These reserves provide a sanctuary where elephants like Amomi play a critical role in maintaining the forest's health by dispersing seeds and creating clearings as they move through the undergrowth.
Standing approximately 3 meters tall at the shoulder and weighing between 2.7 to 4.5 tons, Amomi showcases the majestic presence of African forest elephants. Despite their size, they are surprisingly agile, expertly navigating the dense forest in search of food and water. Amomi, like other elephants, is highly social, living in a herd that communicates through low-frequency sounds and gentle touches.
The region she calls home is rich in wildlife, including gorillas, chimpanzees, and countless plant species. Conservation of these forests is essential not only for Amomi and her herd but also for the entire ecosystem, which faces increasing threats from deforestation and human activities.
